Caritas in Veritate Conference

In 2008, with leadership from Dan Finn, professor of Economics and Theology from St. John’s University, and Paul Caron, retired head of JP Morgan in Belgium and Switzerland, the Institute organized a conference to discuss the relevance of Catholic Social Thought to international economic relations. The True Wealth of Nations, published in 2010 by Oxford University Press, is a collection of the papers that came out of that conference. But the impact of that initial meeting resulted in an ongoing multidisciplinary exploration of the issues raised. In October 2010, twenty-five scholars from economics, sociology, ethics, and theological faculties in the United States, Europe, and Africa along with representatives from the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and leaders from the business community participated in an invitational conference at the Vatican for two days of intense discussion and reflection on Pope Benedict XVI’s social encyclical, Caritas in Veritate. . The papers from this conference were collected, edited by Daniel Finn and published as The Moral Dynamics of Economic

Each essay in the collection is an attempt to engage, extend and critique Benedict’s analysis of “relation” and the implications of a relational, Trinitarian God for daily life in a market economy — both for individuals and organizations. Together, the collection serves as a call for deeper dialogue and a morally based transformation of today’s social and economic structures.
