brings together accomplished, senior mentors in academia and the arts with early-career scholars, writers, and artists. The program has three goals. The first is to inspire the next generation of scholars, artists, and writers for work of creative scholarship or art that engages the intellectual and spiritual traditions of Catholicism. The second is to foster a lifelong vocation for public engagement that serves the common good. The third is to create an inter-generational community of scholars, artists, and writers that sustains reflection on vocation and faith.
This unique program invites a widely-recognized senior scholar or artist to share his or her time and wisdom with early-career scholars or artists whom are devoting their lives to the same vocation as the senior mentor. The GID embodies in short-term form the long-term vision of the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies: to create a multi-generational academic community in which participants experience the mutual enrichment that faith informing scholarship and art, and scholarship and art informing faith provide for the good of each person, spiritual communities, and larger society.

Program Components

  • Four weekends of dialogue over two years in a retreat setting led by a senior mentor. Dialogues include thematic discussions, personal reflection on vocation, shared prayer, and presentations from distinguished scholars or artists. All expenses paid.
  • Ongoing mentorship interaction with senior mentor.
  • Community formation among peer scholars and artists.
  • Opportunity to meet prominent public intellectuals, scholars, and artists.
  • Title of “Mullin Scholar” at the IACS.
  • A $4,000 award


In 2010, the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies launched the GID program. Two cohorts of the GID have occurred. The first was led by John O’Malley, S.J., a Georgetown University professor and distinguished author of The First Jesuits and What Happened at Vatican II. The second was led by Bernard McGinn, professor emeritus at the University of Chicago Divinity School, founding intellectual for the study of spirituality, and author of a five-volume history of spirituality in the West, titled The Presence of God. The third cohort begins in June 2013.

The Vocation of the Writer

The current cohort of the Generations in Dialogue program focuses on the vocation of the writer, led by Gregory Wolfe ( Greg is an established writer, the founding director of the MFA program at Seattle Pacific University, and the founding editor of Image journal. His most recent book is Beauty Will Save the World: Recovering the Human in an Ideological Age (Intercollegiate Studies Institute, 2011).
