John T. Noonan, Jr. is presently a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He is also Robbins Professor of Law, emeritus, at the University of California, Berkeley. His has authored many books, most recently, A Church That Can And Cannot Change (2005) and The Lustre Of Our Country: The American Experience of Religious Liberty (1998).
John Noonan was the consultant on history of the papal Commission on Problems of the Family that advised Paul VI during the Second Vatican Council prior to the issuance of Humanae vitae. He has given the Pope John XXIII Lecture at Catholic University and has been a visiting professor of theology at Boston College and at the Angelicum and at the University of Notre Dame. He holds honorary degrees from the Catholic University of America, Gonzaga University, Holy Cross College, Loyola University of Chicago, Loyola University of New Orleans, the University of Notre Dame, Valparaiso University, the University of Santa Clara and the University of San Francisco. He is currently the First Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies.
